Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
The Electrical Group of the Engineering Department (EN-EL) is responsible for operation, maintenance and works on the CERN electrical network. Within the Electrical Group, you will join the Electrical Project Management Section (EPM), which is responsible for the management of projects related to the CERN’s electrical transmission and distribution network and to the powering of future accelerators.
Functions
As an Electrical Engineer you will support the mission of the group EN-EL, mainly taking part in the studies of the electrical network and infrastructure of the next flagship accelerator of CERN, the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Your tasks will include:
- Define requirements with users;
- Develop the electrical infrastructure for each facility of the accelerator starting from the conceptual study, defining distribution schemes, failure scenarios and backup solutions. Contribute to the study for a potential deployment of energy storage, grid control, FACTS, DC grids;
- Develop and use numerical models of the HV, MV and LV networks of the accelerator to perform the studies;
- Participate to the definition of the connections with the national electrical grids;
- Perform surveys and measures on CERN existing electrical systems (surface and underground) to retrieve information useful for the studies;
- Define the cost estimate of the proposed technical solutions;
- Define and review the requirements of the electrical systems for what concerns the space occupation and the civil works;
- Monitor project progress, ensuring quality, adherence to plans, and deliverables, and report regularly to management;
- Manage scope, planning, budget, risks and coordinate internal team work;
- Prepare tenders, contracts, and oversee contractors.

- Demonstrate experience in the technical analysis of electrical grids and networks;
- Experience in contractor’s management and/or team coordination.
Technical competencies:
- Design and modelling of high-voltage electrical circuits and networks;
- Design and modelling of low-voltage electrical circuits and networks;
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of high voltage and low voltage systems and equipment.
Behavioural competencies:
- Working in Teams:
- Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships;
- Communicating Effectively:
- Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented;
