About the Role
We are seeking an Associate General Counsel - Government to join our General Counsel's Office. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel – Customers and Commercial, this role presents an exciting opportunity to lead the commercial legal and compliance efforts for Thomson Reuters' Government business globally, with a primary focus on US federal, state, and municipal levels of government. The successful candidate will be a key advisor on specialized legal issues unique to contracting with the government sector, managing risk while enabling business growth.
In this opportunity as Associate General Counsel - Government, you will:
- Manage the commercial legal and compliance risk of the Government business globally, with a primary focus on US federal, state, and municipal levels of government.
- Manage the commercial legal support for government contracting, including supporting various contracting vehicles, complex partnership arrangements, and negotiating complex compliance terms (e.g., FedRamp, Accessibility).
- Provide expert legal counsel on product development for the Government business, addressing specialized data privacy requirements, sales practices issues, and accessibility requirements.
- Serve as the leading expert in unique issues associated with sales contracts involving US government counterparties.
- Manage partnership and alliance relationships associated with government contracting.
- Lead and develop an expert team of legal professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Work seamlessly across the General Counsel's Office to ensure consistent and effective legal support.
- Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on government-related legal matters and business opportunities.
- Lead the legal efforts for Thomson Reuters' Government business globally, with a primary focus on US federal, state, and municipal levels of government.
- Stay abreast of legislative and regulatory changes affecting the government business and advise on their impact.
Location
This position will be based in one of our US offices, preferably McLean, Virginia; Washington, D.C; Minneapolis; Dallas or New York.
About You
You're a fit for the role of Associate General Counsel - Government if you have:
- A Juris Doctor; admitted to practice law in the United States and in good standing.
- 10+ years of experience in a large law firm and/or corporate setting, with significant exposure to government contracting and related legal issues.
- Deep understanding of US federal, state, and municipal government procurement laws and regulations.
- Extensive experience in drafting, negotiating, and managing complex government contracts.
- Experience negotiating complex commercial partnerships where the government is the end-user.
- Familiarity with various contracting vehicles including cooperative agreements, RFPs, GSA Schedules, and Fedlink orders.
- Excellent technical legal knowledge in government contract and commercial law, particularly with SaaS products and solutions, including Gen AI products and solutions.
- Strong knowledge of data privacy laws, accessibility requirements, and compliance issues specific to the government sector.
- Proven people leadership skills and a track record of managing and developing high-performing legal teams.
- Sound judgement and consistently demonstrates the highest levels of integrity.
- Exceptional advisory and influence skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to balance legal risk and business objectives.
- Experience in product development and technology transactions within the government sector.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Experience with public sector sales and marketing practices a plus.
- US citizenship or US residency.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The location(s) for this role include one or more of the following metro locations: Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $206,400 - $383,200. The base compensation range in other locations may vary. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
