The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

Your tasks
You will collaborate with European research project partners to plan and conduct thermal-hydraulics (TH) analyses for Small Modular nuclear Reactors (SMRs). In particular, this will include development of system TH models for a prototype design of a district heating SMR. In collaboration with colleagues and potential end users of non-electric nuclear energy production, you will participate in identifying and assessing the safety aspects relating to non-electric uses of nuclear energy. You will publish and present your research results in the form of peer-reviewed articles, conference papers and technical reports.
Your profile
We are looking for a candidate with a university degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, Physics and/or Applied Mathematics with doctorate or equivalent experience. A good working knowledge of single and two-phase fluid dynamics and heat transfer is required. The candidate should ideally have a solid background in nuclear engineering, with experience in thermal-hydraulics analysis of light water nuclear reactors (LWRs). Experience with nuclear systems TH codes, in particular the APROS and/or TRACE codes would be beneficial. The candidate should be fluent in spoken and written English. Proficiency in German is beneficial.
We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
Your employment contract is limited to 3 years.
