The Position

Your department and team

The Neural Signaling section within the Neuroscience and Rare Disease department is located in Basel. The overarching goal of the Neural Signaling Section is to move forward drug discovery projects, from target assessment to early clinical phase, in the therapeutic area of neurodegenerative diseases.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate within the department as well as with labs in the newly established Institute of human biology, consisting of scientists, research associates, PhD students and postdocs. The goal of this project is to study the mechanism of spreading of disease pathology in different neurodegenerative diseases.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • You will perform laboratory activities such as iPSC neurons, transdifferentiated neurons maintenance, treatment and biochemical experimentation

  • You will prepare samples and, in close collaboration with other technical experts, you will perform protein analysis

  • You will implement new assays (transdifferentiation of neurons from fibroblasts) or optimize existing protocols based on literature search to meet the needs of the project

  • You will perform immunostaining and perform confocal microscopy and high content imaging

  • You will prepare data, analyze, interpret and present the data in the lab meetings

Your profile:

  • You are currently enrolled at university as a PhD student (preferably at the end of your PhD)

  • You are excited about performing laboratory experiments, learning techniques and motivated to perform research on cellular neuroscience

  • You have hands-on experience on iPSC neurons, transdifferentiation preparation and/or iPSC maintenance (neurons and microglia), immunostaining, confocal microscopy, experience working on high content imaging & data processing and protein biochemistry such as western blot, immunoprecipitation and AlphaLISA etc

  • You have the ability to design, perform and report the experimental data in high quality

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)

The internship will take place in Basel and is full-time.

The preferred start date of the internship is from August 2024 or according to agreement for a duration of 12 months.
