The Position
Sustainability Change Maker - Student Internship in Device and Packaging Development
Roche is leading the industry with respect to the investment in R&D. We drive one of the largest and most promising pipelines. Pharma Technical Development (PTD) engages with all R&D engines within the Roche group and supports more than 100 development projects with CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls) activities.
Pharma Technical Development Europe Biologics (PTDE) brings game-changing therapies from clinical phase I into the market to serve every patient, every day. Our core business is to develop safe, innovative and effective drugs using cutting edge technologies for manufacturing processes (Drug Substance and Drug Product), clinical supply, formulation, device, packaging, and analytical development. Our daily work also includes compiling of regulatory documents and the transfer of development projects to commercial manufacturing.

In the Device and Packaging Development Department, we are responsible for the development of medical devices, combination products and packaging systems for R&D portfolio drug products. Our activities comprise a wide range of engineering disciplines ranging from the initial definition of product requirements to first commercialization and subsequent product care considering required regulatory, legislative, ecological, economical and technical aspects.
As a sustainability intern, you will support the Roche ambition to improve our environmental impact by 50% over the next ten years.
The internship will be focused on the following responsibilities:

Evaluating, supporting and identifying the development of sustainable alternatives suitable for pharmaceutical and medical device applications.

Performing detailed analysis of device and packaging configurations and materials using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology.

Development and implementation of measures for the device and packaging department derived from the Roche global Product Stewardship initiative.

Innovation through the evaluation and screening of new device and packaging technologies that reduce environmental impact.
Who you are:
You are preparing for a master’s or bachelor’s degree in package engineering, materials science, mechanical, chemical, or similar. You have initial experience with and, above all, a strong desire to further develop your capabilities in:

Innovative spirit and application of design thinking with focus on the end-user

Packaging and/or medical device materials, processes and equipment

First-hand experience applying the life cycle assessment methodology for product development

Author technical documentation

Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal communication skills

English language proficiency required; knowledge of German an asset
