Job Description
OBJECTIVES:
Takeda has a broad and growing oncology pipeline that will build upon our strong commercial foundation in both solid cancer and hematologic malignancies. Business development (BD) will be core to further strengthen Takeda’s foothold in oncology by continuously evaluating opportunities for in-licensing, out-licensing, co-promotions, research collaborations and other partnerships.
• Takeda is seeking a Oncology Search & Evaluation & iDAS Business Liasion focused on Japan and other APAC geographies, to work as part of an international and integrated team. Main partners for this role within Takeda cross-functional partners within the Global Oncology Product and Pipeline Strategy (GOPPS) team, the Oncology team in Japan and other geographies, our Center for External Innovation (CEI), Global Business Development (GBD), and our disease area strategy teams.
• This role will be responsible for helping drive Takeda’s oncology strategy through evaluation of new therapeutic assets and collaboration opportunities, co-owning the oncology BD target list, orchestrating valuations, communicating & influencing, and supporting BD processes from initial search to deal closure as well as liaising with our Japan and other integrated disease area strategy (iDAS) teams.
ACCOUNTABILITES:
Corporate and strategic objectives of Takeda Oncology Business Unit (15%)
• Proactively support shaping and driving Takeda’s oncology portfolio strategy by owning key externally facing activities to grow a late-stage oncology pipeline and build disease area awareness, presence & capabilities
• Engage senior oncology leadership to deliver on the OBU portfolio strategy and business development targets
• Build and upskill the capability and function to perform Search & Evaluation and other applicable activities, with a primary focus on Oncology in Japan but may include other geographies as well
Search & Screen (40%)
• Own and proactively execute the search and triaging process, primarily but not limited to in Japan and other APAC geographies, of external oncology partnership opportunities by participating in & synthesizing stakeholder feedback from partnering and key scientific conferences
• Manage and continuously refine the process, primarily but not limited to Japan, for regular landscape screening efforts to grow Takeda’s external oncology knowledge base and identify novel targets
Valuation (25%)
• Coordinate, lead, and assess licensing, co-promotion, and acquisition opportunities with evidence-based recommendations by synthesizing clinical, scientific, regulatory, medical (KOL), patent and public commercial information – ensuring clear ownership of value-driving assumptions with main stakeholders
• Translate asset valuation insights into forecast and financial models and partner with forecasting, finance, competitive intelligence, commercial and other functions to inform term sheet structure, financing, and negotiations Communicate and champion key messages & business rationale from asset valuations (value drivers, inflections points, key risks, and potential red flags, etc.), external innovation screenings and both their implications for oncology strategy
• Own and drive opportunities end-to-end through project phases, governance bodies and stage-gate decisions by
- Influencing and helping to generate buy-in from relevant stakeholders and senior management absent of specific authority, but by advising & consulting on key strategic and business development questions
- Managing and/or contributing to matrixed project teams across functions and geographies
- Preparing concise and powerful documentation to support discussion and decision making
- Supporting global business develop in their process for review and governance forums including TOMM and PRC
Confirmatory diligence & transaction support (10%)
• Coordinate, in collaboration with GBD, cross-functional teams on confirmatory due diligence efforts and own value-driving diligence streams, ensuring consistent assessment structure and comparability across different asset diligence outputs
Takeda oncology capabilities and network (10%)
• Maintain and expand Takeda’s internal knowledge base in areas of scientific, clinical, and strategic interest by synthesizing and structuring insights from asset valuations, conference attendance, market research, etc.
• Liaise and coordinate with the Japan and other regional iDAS teams with the One Oncology iDAS team to ensure consistency of strategy
• Grow and strengthen existing business relationship with core stakeholders internally and externally of OBU
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• Master’s or graduate degree in a scientific discipline
• Minimum of 10 years experience in pharmaceutical / biotech search and valuation, and / or pharmaceutical portfolio / corporate strategy experience. Experience in healthcare investment banking, strategy consulting or pharma equity analysis will also be considered, as well as MBA or similar.
• Strong understanding of the clinical drug development in Japan and APAC (with experience working with development teams), regulatory, access, and commercialization process; with a preference for previous oncology / hematology experience
• Strong forecasting and financial valuation experience in the pharma context, including basic financial and accounting knowledge (P&L forecasting, DCF valuations, etc.)
• Results-oriented, creative, self-starter with strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills; experience in preparing materials and presenting to executive management desirable.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, proven leadership capabilities and experience leading teams and influencing cross-functional groups (R&D, M&A) in a global setting (cross-cultural experience desirable), including senior leaders to accomplish shared goals
• Experience defining disease area strategies or corporate strategy experience required
• Demonstrated exceptional strategic thinking ability
• Demonstrated ability to understand and translate clinical/scientific information
• Language: Full business proficiency, sufficient to lead negotiation with external stakeholders and have conversation over contracts in English, is required. Ability to communicate or understand written and/or listening in local Japanese language is also required.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
• Willingness to travel to various meetings, conferences or client sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel will be required.
• Requires approximately 10-20% travel
