PhD Position in Chemistry
100%

Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences The position is available upon agreement for 4 years The University of Bern is the third largest University in Switzerland. The position offers a world-class scientific environment with an outstanding infrastructure.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate to join our interdisciplinary research group in the field of molecular (opto)electronics as part of our SNSF-funded Sinergia project.

Tasks
You will synthesize a variety of large ï °-conjugates with tailored functional groups for self-assembled nanostructures on surfaces and/or for studying in-depth photo-induced electron and energy transfer as well as their applications in (opto)electronic devices. Certainly, organic synthesis is a crucial tool for fine-tuning the electronic properties of such ï °-conjugated systems, leading to novel self-assembled nanostructures. The project involves fundamental studies of molecules designed with unique electronic properties, developing methods to grow molecular structures where spin states can be manipulated electrically, and using on-surface reactions for 2D covalent networks.
Your profile
You are an independent, curious, creative, and ambitious team player who enjoys interdisciplinary science, mastering new things, and rigorous experimental work. You possess:
  • Master’s degree in chemistry and/or materials sciences
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in organic synthesis
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of characterization and analytical techniques (NMR and MS), preferably including cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy
  • Good knowledge of the English language

We offer
  • Multi-facetted and interesting range of tasks with further education opportunities
  • Progressive employment and social security provisions in accordance with cantonal guidelines
  • Central location
