Position Overview
The Clinical Laboratory Lead Trainer assists Training Leadership with the day-to-day operations of the training team. They help ensure that decisions are communicated timely and clearly to the team to allow for efficient and effective execution on the daily operations of the training team, and partnering with leadership, ensure each trainer understands priorities and daily responsibilities. When needed, the Clinical Laboratory Lead Trainer acts as a float trainer and subject matter expert for new hires and existing employee training with guided direction from training leadership. The Clinical Laboratory Lead Trainer ensures inspection readiness for both moderate and high-complexity tests as it relates to training, competency, and required documentation for CAP, CLIA, NY, and/or any other regulatory body. This is accomplished through the development, coordination, and implementation of competency scheduling as well as ongoing inspection-readiness activities. Lastly, this role utilizes their training and mentorship skills to develop training expertise within the team.

- Lead training classes and conduct in-lab coaching.
- Evolve and grow curricula:
- Provide review and feedback of current training and/or competency materials.
- Edit existing training materials.
- Evolve training materials for existing classes.
- Create & implement training materials.
- Create and implement training SOPs.
- Lead the creation of learning plans.
- Provide Subject Matter Expertise in Training and in the laboratory:
- Skilled in small or large group facilitation.
- Skilled in identifying and accommodating learner needs.
- Advanced understanding of training concepts.
- Expertise in mentorship.
- Ability to Train the Trainer.
- Basic understanding of training operations.
- Specialized scientific and technical knowledge that is essential to perform pre-analytic, analytic or post analytic phases of the testing.

- Initiate, lead and participate in complex projects in collaboration with leadership.
- Lead team members, providing critical feedback, mentorship, and growth opportunities.
- Identify process gaps, recommend / implement changes.
- Interact with customer leaders for strategy planning.
- Lead change management initiatives.
- Facilitate collaborative problem-solving initiatives.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills including actively updating stakeholders, resolving conflicts, and actively engages with customers to seek pain points and feedback.
- Schedule, communicate, and coordinate training sessions and learner completions.
- Complete administrative tasks to coordinate and track training progress and needs.
- Identify learning needs by assessing overall status of employee performance and departmental needs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training and coordinate data metrics for department training goals.
- Assist in retraining employees, as needed.
- Collaborate with other trainers’ cross-functionally.
- Assist in the development and administration of learning exams and/or competency evaluations.
- Deliver training through in-person training, virtual training, hands-on/on-the-job training, virtual training, and other modalities, as needed.
- Remain informed of procedure/workflow updates and distribute information appropriately.
- Maintain accurate records of training in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
- Help develop the training expertise, behavior, mindsets, and skillsets of team members.
- Meet the requirements to perform clinical laboratory tasks in the areas you are qualified to train:
- Remain up to date on all competencies related to tasks certified to train, and perform clinical laboratory tasks when needed.
- Ability to meet quality and regulatory standards related to tasks certified to train.
- Accurate handling and disposing of specimens following universal precautions and applicable safety policies.

- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

- Physical requirements:
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 75% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
- Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
- Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
- Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
- Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
- May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
- Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
- Ability to work 100% of the time onsite at assigned laboratory location.
Minimum Qualifications*
- Associates Degree in Business Administration, Education, Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Diploma/General Education Degree (GED) and 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of Associates Degree.
- Some high complexity tasks may require additional education to perform competency assessment per CLIA by meeting one of these three requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, with 2+ years of lab experience/lab-education program experience in a lab providing moderate and/or high complexity testing or 1+ year performing high complexity testing;
- Associates Degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or equivalent education and training (specified below) and 2+ years lab experience/lab-education program experience in a lab providing high complexity testing.
- Equivalent Education and Training:
- At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, one of the following and 3 months documented laboratory training/education:
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
- 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
- 6 semester hours of chemistry; and
- 6 semester hours of biology; and
- 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, one of the following and 3 months documented laboratory training/education:
- Some high complexity tasks may require additional education to perform competency assessment per CLIA by meeting one of these three requirements:
- 6+ years of professional experience related to the essential duties of the position.
- Advanced understanding of instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, technical, and/or hands-on/on-the-job training.
- 2+ years of laboratory experience with a strong understanding of working in a laboratory or similar environment with professional working knowledge of HIPAA, GLP, GDP, and laboratory terminology and equipment.
- Some high complexity tasks may require additional experience to perform competency assessment per CLIA guidelines.
- Strong computer skills to include Internet navigation, use of virtual meeting tools and platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, email usage, word processing, and data/records management.
- Demonstrated ability to perform Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year experience in a mentorship role or directly/indirectly leading others.
- Experience with a lab information management (LIM) or LIS software.
- Experience in molecular testing.
- Possession of and ability to maintain ASCP Certification or state licensure that has been determined to be equivalent.
Salary Range:
$67,000.00 - $109,000.00The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
