Postdoctoral Fellow in experimental research on atmospheric aerosol

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

Your tasks

The Aerosol Physics and Optics Group of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) fosters more than 30 years of experience in long-term observations of atmospheric aerosol. In the context of the Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS) and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program, we perform continuous observations at the high-altitude research station Jungfraujoch and at the Payerne observatory in the Swiss midlands. These continuous observations serve as a basis for dedicated studies on aerosol and cloud related processes and their environmental and climate impacts.

Your main tasks involve:

  • Supporting the ongoing continuous observations and data management as well as external scientific users of our observational and data platforms
  • Developing own research questions and organizing intensive field experiments to address them
  • Interpretation of aerosol in situ observation results in context of data from aerosol remote sensing, gas phase and meteorological measurements
  • Publication of research results in international journals and presentation at conferences

Your profile

  • PhD degree in physics, chemistry, atmospheric science or related field
  • Wide-ranging understanding in aerosol physical and chemical measurement techniques
  • Good scientific programming skills with experience in handling large data sets invarious formats
  • Enthusiasm to work and collaborate in a multidisciplinary multi-ethnic research environment
  • Excellent English language skills
