The Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture ranks among the most renowned technical universities of applied sciences in Switzerland. With its core theme of engineering and design for humanity and the environment, the School makes valuable contributions to teaching and research in the field. Our lecturers and students work towards realizing the working world of tomorrow.
The Institute of Medical Engineering is part of the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture. Its main activity is focused on research and education in the field of medical engineering, bio-medical and biotechnological research, related to space medicine and mechano-biological dysfunction on Earth. Experiments carried out under simulated or real microgravity, as well as under terrestrial conditions, address important questions concerning biological mechanisms of signal transduction.
The Institute of Medical Engineering maintains in addition the Biotechnology Space Support Center (BIOTESC) as part of the User Support and Operations Center (USOC) of the European Space Agency ESA. Tasks of the center include providing the necessary infrastructure and support to scientists, conducting biological experiments in the European space laboratory "COLUMBUS" of the International Space Station ISS. Furthermore, the BIOTESC center is responsible for the implementation of the operational products as well as for the support of astronauts while executing the associated biological experiments onboard the ISS from our integrated Control Room.
