Former employee
My contractual employment conditions were above average! Salary, vacation, working hours, pension plan and other benefits are very progressive! Well-equipped, modern depot. First-class infrastructure, no shortage of tools and vehicles. They work with equipment that you wouldn't even dare to dream of in the private sector. The only question is how to finance it, given that the municipality has the highest per capita debt in the canton (a recurring topic in the media, but one that need not concern employees who live elsewhere). The majority of employees and some superiors are very sociable and cooperative.
The management style and apparatus at the depot could be improved. Although concerns are acknowledged, they are resolved in an extremely protracted manner, if at all. There is a lot of talking, discussing and promising. In weekly meetings, an unnecessary number of "little problems" are talked to death instead of decisions being made and tackled in a simple manner. Confidential information does not always remain confidential. A few (long-standing) employees create a poor working atmosphere, but this is tolerated from above. Working under constant observation is also tedious (this does not mean the general public). Unobjective and professionally incorrect criticism is the order of the day for some employees/superiors and seems to be part of the company culture. Criticism is rarely communicated directly by the person in question, often via third parties or via the many meetings. Countless checklists are used, which require rational revision. The response to suggestions for improvement is very inflexible. Although work planning (compared to the private sector) would be very manageable and plannable, as an employee you have to be able to react very flexibly to the countless "emergencies". In the end, there are very good reasons to be employed at Werkhof, but also many reasons to decide against it or to leave again.
