The IPI is responsible for maintaining the public IP rights administration register and informing the general public about the possibilities of protecting intellectual property. It is the federal government's centre of competence for all issues concerning patent and trade mark protection, indications of source, design protection and copyright and prepares legislation in these areas. The IPI also represents Switzerland within international organisations and vis-à-vis other countries.
