Full-stack web developer
Are you a creative developer with a knack for blending technical precision with visual flair? Are you excited about the chance to enhance a website that’s both scientifically authoritative and publicly impactful? Join our team and contribute to the evolution of Swiss Seismological Service and a range of other project websites the Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich hosts.
Project background
The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zurich is the federal agency responsible for monitoring earthquakes in Switzerland and its neighbouring regions and for assessing Switzerland’s seismic hazard and risk. When an earthquake happens, the SED informs the public, authorities, and the media about the earthquake’s location, magnitude, and possible consequences.
The SED web team designs, hosts, and maintains various websites, ensuring high availability, real-time data integration, and high-performance services. We are committed to creating websites that are technically robust and visually engaging for a diverse audience.
Job description
You will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team focused on delivering reliable, scalable, and secure websites. Your work will be pivotal in maintaining and advancing SED’s web presences, where both technology and design meet.
In this role, you will
- design front-ends that are accessible, visually appealing, and centered around user needs, making our digital presence as engaging as it is informative.
- set up robust, future-ready web services, ensuring their long-term stability, scalability, and security.
- troubleshoot and resolve issues with web hosting, databases, and infrastructure to maintain peak performance and minimal downtime.
- become a part of the IT Pikett team where you proactively manage and resolve issues across our technology infrastructure to ensure continuous reliability and peak performance for current and future operations.
- work closely with communication specialists, domain scientists, and stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into effective web solutions.
If you are passionate about creating impactful web experiences, have a talent for user-centered design, and thrive in a collaborative setting, this role is for you.
Profile
- A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional training.
- At least two years of experience in full-stack web development, with a focus on front-end development.
- A solid understanding of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML for creating responsive, user-friendly, and visually engaging web interfaces. Experience with front-end frameworks such as React, Vue, or Angular, or proficiency in using Web Components, is a plus.
- Proven experience with web services development and maintenance, ideally with expertise in Python.
- Familiarity with UI/UX design principles and tools (i.e. Figma).
- Comfort with Linux command-line tools, system administration tasks, and version control with Git.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work closely with non-technical stakeholders and to explain technical concepts clearly.
- Profound English skills, knowledge of a national language as a plus.
- A proactive approach to problem-solving, along with the motivation to acquire new skills and apply them in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.
We offer
- A multifaceted position at the intersection of IT, communications, and science.
- An inspiring environment and the possibility to gain insights into many different projects.
- The opportunity to shape projects from concept to completion, working with innovative technologies.
- A workplace at the ETH Zurich campus in downtown Zurich.
- An annual renewable contract for up to five years.
- We are looking for someone who can start in February 2025 or by appointment.
