Internship in Decision Support and mathematical Optimization

Participate in the power supply in Switzerland

In this exciting position, you will work independently to drive the expansion of functionalities in the area of optimisation-based decision support for the real-time operation and forward planning of the transmission system. You will be faced with the following tasks:

  • Independently planning and coordinating tasks to help extend the functionality of optimisation-based decision support (optimal power flow, forecasting, etc.)
  • Discovering the use cases of mathematical optimisation in the transmission system
  • Familiarising yourself with Swissgrid’s concepts of grid operation (voltage maintenance, grid security, etc.)
  • Developing pragmatic solutions for optimisation-based decision support in the transmission system
  • Contributing to the project from day one, with support from various specialists

This is how you make the difference

For this versatile internship, we are looking for a highly motivated individual with an independent, analytical way of working. You also have the following:

  • A background as a student in engineering (e.g. electrical engineering, energy engineering, control engineering, operations research or a similar subject), ideally with a Bachelor’s degree. You have an overall understanding of the electricity industry and are open to interdisciplinary activities
  • Initial experience in the areas of transmission system modelling and/or mathematical optimisation
  • Proficiency at working with data and good programming skills (MATLAB, Python or similar).
  • Excellent knowledge of German or English

What we offer

  • A comprehensive look behind the scenes of the electricity industry and an understanding of its challenges, as well as in-depth insights into the development of the grid of the future
  • Varied and exciting tasks within a company unique to Switzerland

About us

The Market business unit is Swissgrid’s operational hub. Our experienced specialists assume responsibility for grid operations and for the markets for ancillary services. They also conduct congestion management at Switzerland’s borders and actively help shape the development of the electricity market in Switzerland and Europe. In the grid control room “Swissgrid Control” at the heart of Switzerland’s supply of electricity, various teams monitor and control the electricity flows in the grid around the clock.

Our Operational Decision Support team is responsible for the development and operation of applications for operational decision support, in close cooperation with internal IT.
