Employment is fixed term for 9 months.
The Institute of Political Science at the University of Bern is one of the leading political science departments in Switzerland. At the IPW, the student assistant will support the postdoc researcher (Dr. Rothermel) at the international and interdisciplinary research team of the Horizon Europe Project “UNTWIST”. The role includes supporting ongoing research projects on online radicalization in far-right male supremacist communities (e.g. incels) as well as the role of gender in the mobilization of far-right parties across Europe.
Tasks
- Support the research activities of the Horizon EU project "UNTWIST," including (mostly qualitative) data analysis, and drafting project reports
- Support with research management including database updates and background research for grant applications, joint research projects and the development of a Special Issue Collection on Gender-based Needs in Europe
- Depending on interest and capacities, development of research outputs in the form of public reports and/or journal articles
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Gender Studies, or Sociology
- Enrolment in a Swiss university for the entire duration of the employment
- Very good knowledge of English (spoken and written) (B2 level), knowledge of (Swiss-)German advantageous, but not required
- good research and organizational skills and ability to write concise summaries
- Familiarity working with MS Office applications including Excel, Word and Teams, as well as the Video Platform Zoom
- Experience in or willingness to learn qualitative coding skills for in-depth text and discourse analysis in MAXQDA
Optional:
- Knowledge of or interest the topics of online (far-right) radicalization, political violence, and feminist theories
- Interest in programming languages for data analysis (e.g., Python) and/or in qualitative coding software (e.g., MAXQDA)
- Experience working with the literature database Zotero is an advantage
