Institute of Cell Biology, Research Group Gluenz
The Institute of Cell Biology (IZB) is one of three institutes constituting the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science of the University of Bern (see www.izb.unibe.ch). Research at the IZB covers a broad range of organism and experimental methods. The Gluenz Lab studies the protozoan parasite Leishmania to understand the cellular mechanisms that enable these unicellular parasites to pass through their life cycle and cause disease.
Tasks
This position is available for an experienced postdoctoral researcher to support the development of new genetic tools and to study the function of proton pumps in Leishmania, as part of an ongoing project funded by the Swiss National Science foundation.
Specific Tasks include:
- Development of tools for conditional disruption of gene or protein function in Leishmania and Trypanosoma
- Screening of Leishmania and Trypanosoma mutant libraries
- Carrying out experiments to study the function of proton pumps in Leishmania
- Supervision of students' research projects
Requirements
We are looking for an experienced and motivated person with several years' research experience in a relevant research field.
Specific experience required:
- PhD in a relevant subject
- Several years' postdoctoral experience of working with kinetoplastid parasites in the laboratory
- Experience in high-throughput screening methods, such as screening genome-wide libraries
- Advanced practical skills in molecular cell biology methods, including microscopy, protein assays and DNA sequencing.
- Advanced bioinformatics skills including data analysis and visualization with R and Python.
- Experience of image data analysis and processing of microscopy images with software such as FIJI
- Proven track record of developing new tools or protocols in a relevant area of research
- Proven track record of leading research projects and bringing projects to a conclusion, as evidenced e.g. by publications in peer reviewed journals
- The ability to keep detailed and accurate records
- The ability to communicate effectively
- The ability to work as a member of a team
- Experience of providing supervision to junior members of a research lab
We offer
