Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Job Description
Introduction
Are you an experienced Mechanical Technician with a passion for cutting-edge technology, precision assemblies and eager to contribute to scientific breakthroughs? Join the ATLAS Detector Operation Group at CERN and be part of the team who is operating and upgrading ATLAS to unlock new frontiers in particle physics.
As a Mechanical Technician, you will play a key role in the ATLAS upgrade project. In the first stage, you will contribute to the design, prototyping, assembly, and testing of support structures for the next-generation silicon ATLAS tracker. In the second stage, you will take part in the installation of advanced detector systems in the complex underground experimental cavern. This dual role offers a unique opportunity to develop a broad spectrum of professional skills while addressing exciting technical challenges. Success in this role will rely on your strong team spirit and ability to collaborate effectively.
Functions
In your role as a Mechanical Technician within the ATLAS Detector Operation (ADO) group of the Experimental Physics (EP) department , your functions will include:
- Commitment to mechanical activities on ATLAS detector consolidation and upgrade
- Installation of new sub-detectors involving specialized mechanical tooling and precise positioning.
- Installation of specific access platforms and standard scaffolding towers in various configurations.
- Participation in sub-detector movements requiring high positioning accuracy, as well as operating hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical equipment.
- Manufacturing of parts and tooling using both conventional and CNC machines.
- Identifying issues, reporting them, and proposing improvements.
- Participation in the construction of ITk Pixel Outer Barrel
- Read mechanical blueprints and identify manufacturing methods.
- Propose relevant improvement to manufacturing methods for tooling and assembly procedures.
- Manufacture parts and tooling using both conventional and CNC machines.
- Participate in the production and assembly of the support structures and the cooling pipework.
- Perform and document quality control tests for detector components and assemblies, including dimensional metrology and mechanical tests; Take part in the analysis of the test results and the implementation of corrective measures when needed.
- Ordering components, tooling, raw materials
- Coordination of simple tasks (handling, frame assembly, logistics) with CERN collaborators

Experience:
Required Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in high precision mechanical assembly and manufacturing.
- Extensive experience in on-site installation of mechanical devices or structures.
- Strong experience in precision machining of metallic and non-metallic parts using both conventional and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines.
- Good understanding of mechanical design drawings and tolerance specifications.
Initial experience in the following areas would be an asset:
- Operation of hydraulic, pneumatic or electromechanical equipment.
- Hands-on experience with structural joining techniques, particularly adhesive bonding.
- Performing dimensional measurements (conventional or measuring machine).
- Mechanical design using CAD software.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation
- Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment
- Manufacturing of mechanical parts
- Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centers
Behavioral competencies:
- Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting Using time efficiently and effectively
- Demonstrating Flexibility: being willing to move from one project/group/department to another Adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements
