The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bern offers two PhD positions within the project "Worldly Indeterminacy", which is funded by an SNSF Consolidator grant. The working hypothesis of this project is that there are facts about the world that remain indeterminate no matter how much we know. The goal is to develop a metaphysical theory of this indeterminacy and to investigate its consequences for normative questions, especially the attribution of responsibility.

The project group will consist of four members: Prof. Dr. Vera Hoffmann-Kolss (University of Bern), Dr. Jonas Werner (University of Bern), and two PhD candidates.

Responsibilities
You will conduct research within the overall theme of the project and write a dissertation in philosophy. In addition, you will organize workshops and meetings for the project, participate in international conferences, and regularly attend both internal project meetings as well as colloquia and seminars at the Institute of Philosophy in Bern. You may also contribute to teaching and supervision in areas relevant to your PhD project.
Requirements
  • Excellent Master’s degree in philosophy
  • Ideally a background in metaphysics, philosophy of science, or metaethics
  • Willingness to actively participate in an international research project
  • Excellent writing and communication skills and a good command of written and spoken English
