Our Transportation industry team supports clients throughout the United States by providing high impact and high value risk-based system safety, system security, and fire/life safety consulting and engineering services across multiple industries. Our clients include a mix of Federal, State and Local government agencies.
We are looking for individuals who possess the knowledge, skills, and expertise to serve in the role of Rail Transit / Transportation Safety Consultant working with the North Carolina DOT and focusing on the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) requirements for State Safety Oversight. The position will be based in (or near) Charlotte, NC and may require travel to client and project sites on an as-needed basis.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
The successful applicant will be a self-starter that is able to work both independently and as part of dynamic and diverse project teams, including both local and remote teams, and with internal and external client stakeholders. Successful candidates must also have strong project planning and execution skills and be capable of managing multiple tasks orders/projects. Additional candidate qualifications include:
- Bachelor of Science Degree; Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or other related field.
- Experience with MIL-STD 882, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Handbook for Transit Safety and Security Certification, or other industry recognized safety methodologies and guidelines.
- Experience managing safety and security programs for transit projects and transit agencies in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulations and guidelines.
- Experience performing various safety analysis techniques including preliminary hazard analysis (PHA) and threat and vulnerability analysis (TVA).
- Experience interpreting nationally recognized safety codes, standards and regulations.
- Experience in process consultation, project management, problem-solving and statistical analysis desired.
- Experience with transportation systems, including vehicles, signaling, and communications systems.
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills required.
- Strong written and oral communication skills required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to present project materials and findings to client personnel from all levels of organization, from front line employees to senior executive staff.
Basic duties of the position may include:
- Reviewing technical documentation and drawings and issuing comments regarding compliance with safety standards.
- Conducting reviews of technical documents, drawings, specifications and operating procedures to assure codes, standards and principles are integrated into the project life cycle.
- Conducting site visits in the field to verify safety and quality requirements have been met through documentation or visual means and preparing reports.
- Implementing safety requirements issued by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
- Developing safety and security design criteria and requirements for technical specifications.
- Conducting reviews and analyses of Standard and Emergency Operating Procedures, operating rules, bulletins and training programs.
- Preparing and reviewing accident/incident reports and assisting with the development of corrective actions.
- Implementing FTA safety regulations and supporting related activities associated with the State Safety Oversight Program.
- Developing and/or reviewing safety training programs for employees and recommending revisions as needed.
- Participating on and/or leading safety committees and safety audit teams and developing comprehensive safety reports.
- Job may require visits to active work sites and/or transit facilities.
