Position Summary
The Director, Business Development will help grow the business of the NHL across key markets in Europe. The role will report directly to the Vice President of Business Development and work closely with NHL’s European and US counterparts. Its main goal is to help develop and execute strategies to advance the NHL’s commercial footprint across Europe– with a secondary focus on the selling of annual NHL regular season games in European cities.
The role will be based in Zurich, Switzerland with a requirement for international travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the League’s European business development efforts through sales contacts and sales agency relationships. This specifically includes:
- Lead generation
- Sales proposals
- Ideation documents
- Case studies
- Research insights analyses
- Assist in the ideation process around the development of custom solutions based on brand briefs provided by new and current NHL partners
- Analyze and formulate custom research developed for sales purposes secured through League research vendors
- Support the sales process through coordination and collaboration with various internal NHL departments
- Work with existing sponsors on potential incremental commercial opportunities
- Work with Legal to finalise sponsorship agreements
- Ongoing relationship management with key external business contacts at partners and potential partners
- Follow industry trends and news to anticipate changes in the sector and impact on the NHL
Desired Experience / Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree required/advanced degree preferred
- A minimum of 6-10 years’ experience in sponsorship sales, partnership marketing or media sales with a sports/entertainment property or consulting/activation agency
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong understanding of sponsorship sales and the sports business landscape
- Must be a highly motivated and organized individual
- Collaborative and teamwork-focused mentality
- Ability to multi-task in a deadline-driven environment
- Commercial and business development skills
- Good understanding of the sponsorship market
- Knowledge in event management
- Legal and financial understanding
- English (proficiency level or native). Other Languages a plus
- Microsoft Office suite proficient
