Master Thesis

Characterization of Oscillating Neural Networks for AI Applications

Ref. 2024_034

About us

The IBM Research Zurich lab stands at the forefront of European research, actively leading and shaping future technologies through close partnerships with academia and industry. One of its main focuses is on exploring and delivering pioneer results in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Neuromorphic Computing, where tremendous data processing results in large power consumption and long computing times.

Our research into neural networks deploys tools from physics to power machine learning applications.[ 1 ] We focus on oscillation-based computing that has shown promise in offering energy-efficient solutions to complex computational challenges.[ 2 ] These networks use nanoscale oscillating devices, leveraging the unique properties of VO2, with information encoded in the phase relationship between oscillators.[ 3 , 4 ]

The Physics and Science of Information (Ψ) group at IBM Research Zurich is actively investigating the computational potential of this technology as part of the PHASTRAC project and would like to invite you to join for a semester-long project starting in February 2025. The position is intended for a Master’s thesis project and will not be compensated financially.

Role Description

In this project, you will have the opportunity to work on novel device and circuit concepts. Your responsibilities will involve the integration of our VO2-based oscillators into coupled neural networks, as well as characterization, simulation and development of circuits for powerful computation. You will benefit from access to world-class research facilities, including the ETH/IBM BRNC cleanroom. You will gain valuable experience in automated measurements, advanced tooling and data analysis while collaborating with a diverse and international team that values innovation and cooperation.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Master's program in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken English.
  • Programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Experience in circuit simulation is a plus.
  • Prior internship or industrial experience is preferred but not required.

Diversity

IBM is committed to diversity at the workplace. With us you will find an open, multicultural environment. Excellent flexible working arrangements enable all genders to strike the desired balance between their professional development and their personal lives.
