At Alpiq, we are currently looking for a new Senior Legal Counsel for our trading and origination activities throughout Europe, with a special focus on the Swiss, the German and the Scandinavian markets. This senior role comes with a diverse set of responsibilities and challenges, due to the high complexity of Alpiq's international energy trading activity and its respective legal requirements and demanding stakeholder management. The current dynamics of the rapidly changing energy industry add additional challenges to this role and make it particularly exciting. It reports to the Head Legal Trading & Origination and is ideally based in Olten, Switzerland. 

Your main responsibilities

  • Providing expert legal advice, reviewing and drafting documentation in relation to energy trading (through exchanges as well as OTC, both physical and financial products) and purchase and sale (long term energy supply agreements, PPAs) of electricity, electricity storage (batteries), natural gas, natural gas storage, guarantees of origin, European emission allowances, hydrogen and synthetic fuels, balancing service agreements and related agreements with TSOs, brokers, clearing houses
  • Negotiation of master agreements (EFET, ISDA, FEMA, etc.)
  • Managing claims, litigation and arbitration cases 
  • Providing strategic advice on legal matters
  • Assessing legal risks and opportunities, proposing and supporting related mitigation options
  • Managing relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Selecting and managing external counsel in a value added and cost-efficient manner, using external counsel where required but handling matters internally wherever possible
  • Providing training on legal topics to trading and origination teams as well as support functions

Your profile

  • Qualified lawyer, with good knowledge of Swiss or German legal system
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in law firm and/or in-house
  • Strong command of energy markets and/or financial trading, with proven experience in power and gas EFET documentation, ISDA documentation, PPAs and long-term power and gas offtake and supply agreements
  • Experience working across Europe
  • Proven track record in managing litigation and arbitration cases
  • Excellent communication, drafting and influencing skills, ability to inspire trust and promote cross-functional collaboration
  • Personal gravitas and ability to challenge others, ability to find and propose alternative solutions
  • Good business acumen and commercial sense; understanding of energy industry of advantage
  • Fluency in English and German, additional European languages of advantage
