The Imaging Core Facility (IMCF) is looking for a junior image analyst with a strong interest in biological applications and a helper-mindset keen on empowering scientists.

Your position

Typical tasks include:
  • User support and training with image analysis related topics.
  • Development and implementation of image / data processing pipelines, mostly based on scripting common bioimaging toolkits like ImageJ/Fiji, Python (Cellpose, Stardist, Scikit-image, Napari), QuPath, Ilastik, Imaris etc.
  • Work in close collaboration in a versatile team with members experienced in image analysis and advanced light microscopy.

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a Master or PhD degree in Computer Science, Physics, Biology or a related field, who has proven competence in image processing and is comfortable coding in a programming language like Python or Groovy. Knowledge on training and/or applying deep learning models is considered an advantage.
As an ideal candidate, you are service-minded, proactive, and an excellent team player. You will be part of a team of experts designing, implementing and evaluating new software solutions for image analysis to support Biozentrum scientists in their research projects. We collaborate with imaging facilities and staff scientists in-house and across Switzerland, and we expect you to have excellent social and networking skills and to enjoy collaborating with peers. Good communication skills in English are essential.

The IMCF is operating a high-end image analysis infrastructure with powerful Virtual Desktops, high-speed storage systems, automated data transfer and an image data management platform based on OMERO. We strive to streamline our analysis workflows tailored to each user's individual demands using modern tools like GitLab, CI, Jupyter notebooks and cooperate closely with other infrastructure providers at the university to scale out solutions e.g. on the HPC cluster system. We provide individualized and personalized onboarding and an open communication culture that encourages you to bring your own ideas to the table.

The Biozentrum offers a cutting-edge research infrastructure, a highly international environment and excellent working conditions: Access to sports programs and fitness facilities, well-established services for balancing career and family (e.g. childcare, modern parenthood regulations and more) and numerous courses for training and development. Salary and benefits are according to University of Basel standards.
The position provides an ideal environment into a microscopy facility career. It is initially limited to one year, but can be extended up to six years. The preferred start date is 1 March 2025, but can be negotiated.
