This is a role for an experienced senior banker with the ambition to lead a complex and high revenue business. You will bring an ambitious and positive vision to the next phase of Citi Japan’s financial institutions group (FIG) strategy.

Franchise and Business Overview
Citi’s presence in Japan dates to 1902 and our first branch in Yokohama. Today, Citi has a large wholesale banking presence in the country, with over 1,300 staff working in Tokyo, Osaka, and Okinawa. Citi brings local expertise and global resources to clients, and Japan is one of the most important markets for our bank.
Corporate Banking provides the central relationship contact point for clients. Corporate bankers lead the client relationship management, account strategy and planning, credit sponsorship, and compliance actions. Every day the bank provides clients with solutions in Japan and around our 95-country network. These include lending, trade and export finance, debt and equity capital markets, derivatives and FX, investment solutions, cash management, securities custody, and strategic advisory. Corporate bankers leverage their client relationships to deliver Citi’s full capabilities, and to help solve our clients’ financial challenges. The Corporate Banking team works closely with specialists in Investment Banking, Markets, Treasury & Trade Services, and Securities Services to develop and deliver solutions to clients. Transaction and portfolio management is supported by independent credit management (ICM), capital management, risk, and independent compliance teams.
Financial institutions is the industry segment generating the largest share of total client revenues. The client portfolio consists of a broad range of names across Japanese banks, life and property & casualty insurance companies, asset managers and non-bank financial institution (NBFI) clients. The team also serves subsidiaries of foreign-headquartered FIG clients operating in Japan.
Role Description:
The Head of Financial Institutions corporate banking for Japan will be Citi’s senior client relationship representative for the financial industry sector. The role involves leading a team of 12 banking professionals, developing, and executing Citi’s client calling and relationship strategies, and serving as the senior relationship banker with high profile clients. When developing strategy, the successful candidate will need to balance the revenue growth of the franchise with strong credit and compliance controls. Extensive knowledge of the client segment, combined with trusted senior relationships will enable the successful candidate to drive an industry growth plan to be delivered through product and franchise partners in Japan and around the world. The role will involve some travelling to clients in their offices outside Japan.
This leader will drive the client coverage strategy working continuously to align client account plans with all Citi partners in products, services, ICM, Risk, capital management, and audit functions. As a department head they will balance near-term and long-term priorities allowing the franchise to benefit from market driven opportunities whilst positioning Citi to serve evolving client needs over the long run. The role reports directly to the Japan Corporate Banking Head and has a matrix report to Japan, Asia North & Australia (JANA) and to Global Corporate Banking FIG heads.
The Head of Financial Institutions role is a member of the Japan Corporate Banking operating committee (OpCo), and a member of the Global Corporate Banking FIG Leadership committee.

Experienced and ambitious senior banker. Proven ability to lead a large, complex, and high revenue business. Communicates a positive vision of how to improve and grow Citi Japan’s FIG client business.

Ability to synthesize complex challenges and build consensus quickly across many partners (“1-Citi mindset”). Can act decisively within a competitive and time-constrained operating environment.

Proven ability to build and maintain senior executive and board level relationships. Deep knowledge of the financial institutions sector.

Track record of people management and development in diverse teams. Change management mindset.

Credibility as senior sponsor for FIG business internally.

Transaction origination and execution track record.

Extensive knowledge of the full suite of Citi’s Global Markets, Services and Banking products. Possesses a cross-sell mindset, and can leverage Citi’s products, services, and global network. Will have expertise in specific product sets.

Demonstrates strong balanced risk judgement. Candidate is a business Senior Credit Officer (SCO), or equivalent. If not already a Citi Senior Credit Officer, the successful candidate will be expected to enter the Citi SCO elevation process upon coming into the role.

Active leadership of controls and compliance, including time-sensitive processes such as KYC and AML.

Ability to manage and work across a diverse and multi-country matrix structure.

Fluency in Japanese and English. Proficient in the cultural norms required for senior coverage of Japanese institutions.

Japan Securities Dealers Association (JSDA) Class 1 and 2 certifications.
