The University of Bern invites applications for an extraordinary (associate) or ordinary (full) professorship (100%) in General Linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics, to start August 1, 2025.
Applicants are expected to teach representative topics covering the field of general linguistics, and to carry out research primarily on languages outside Europe and the Indo-European family. The successful candidate pursues innovative approaches in linguistic theorization that directly connect to sociolinguistic research questions.
Their research should be based on detailed analysis of primary field work data. While taking an approach in usage-based and typological linguistics, the successful candidate should cover different subfields to complement the existing expertise in morphosyntax.
Active participation in efforts to connect the linguistic disciplines at the University of Bern and to help develop common resources is expected. This includes the Center for the Study of Language and Society at the Walter Benjamin Kolleg, as well as the philologies. The successful candidate builds a bridge between general linguistic and sociolinguistic research at the University of Bern.
The Faculty of Humanities welcomes applications from people with disabilities, People of Color, and people who, in the Swiss context, are from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Applications including a CV, proof of habilitation or equivalent academic research output, list of publications, list of courses taught, list of externally funded projects, and information on previous employment and participation in academic administration are to be submitted in electronic form by December 1, 2024.
