Job Summary
The Head of Science will report to the Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for leading and managing the teaching, learning, and resources within the Science department. This role includes curriculum development, innovative teaching strategies, and promoting inquiry-based learning. As a member of the Heads of Department Team, the Head of Science will positively contribute to the school’s strategic initiatives and guide a cohesive, collaborative department culture. Teaching and Learning
- Curriculum Development: Lead and update the Science curriculum to meet IB standards and reflect the latest in science pedagogy.
- Inquiry-Based Learning: Promote critical thinking and problem-solving through hands-on, real-world applications in science.
- Interdisciplinary Planning: Collaborate with other departments to integrate science concepts into broader learning themes.
- Innovative Techniques: Encourage digital tools and modern methods to engage students effectively.
Assessment and Reporting
- Assessment Practices: Develop clear, consistent assessment methods that align with IB criteria.
- Feedback and Data Use: Ensure timely, constructive feedback for students and use data insights to refine teaching approaches.
- Communication: Coordinate accurate reporting to students, parents, and leadership on student progress.
Curriculum development
- Team Collaboration: Attend and relay Head of Department updates, implementing curriculum changes within the Science team.
- Relevance and Inclusivity: Ensure the curriculum is relevant to current scientific advances and adaptable to diverse learning needs.
- Resource Management: Oversee department resources to keep materials up-to-date and effective.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
- Supportive Environment: Foster an inclusive, respectful classroom culture that supports students’ personal and academic growth.
- Positive Peer Interaction: Model empathy, respect, and collaboration to create a welcoming, cooperative classroom atmosphere.
Family and Community Engagement
- Parent Workshops: Lead parent information sessions on the Science curriculum and support parent engagement.
- Open Communication: Maintain strong communication with families, keeping them informed and engaged in their child’s learning.
Leadership and Departmental Oversight
- Mentorship: Support Science teachers’ professional growth through guidance, feedback, and resource sharing.
- Budget Management: Plan and oversee the department budget, ensuring effective use of resources.
- School-Wide Initiatives: Participate in school-wide initiatives, aligning department goals with the school’s strategic vision.
The initial contract is for three years and is renewable.
