Swissgrid is a technology- and innovation-driven company that focuses on the future of electricity in Switzerland. We have our employees who develop the best possible solutions for the Swiss transmission grid with the highest level of motivation, commitment and quality. They are responsible for the safe operation and the constant further development of the top grid level. Ensuring the safety of people, installations and the environment is the top priority. Our shared awareness that we are working for a critical infrastructure and thus making an important contribution to the high quality of life in Switzerland is what motivates us in our daily work. After all, electricity is crucial for everyday life.
As the first European transmission system operator, Swissgrid will largely automate the procurement of grid-stabilizing balancing energy with the help of an autopilot. This in-house developed autopilot generates real-time forecasts and autonomously activates the balancing energy through a market - eliminating the need for manual interventions. By doing so, Swissgrid sets new standards for innovation, efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
As an intern in the Development & Optimization team, you will work on the continuous improvement of this autopilot, aiming to boost performance and reliability. You will experience agile collaboration in an interdisciplinary and fast-paced environment, leverage a cutting-edge tech stack and cloud technologies, and play an active role in shaping the future of electrical grid operations.
You will be challenged with:
- The development of new machine learning models for forecasting balancing energy demand and evaluate their performance in live operation.
- You ensure that machine learning models operate reliably, scalably, and efficiently in production by implementing MLOps practices
- You set new standards in our data ecosystem to enhance the efficiency and robustness of the autopilot.
This is how you make a difference
We are seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual who excels both independently and in a collaborative team environment. You have a strong analytical mindset, a creative approach to problem-solving, and develop innovative solutions.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
- Prior experience with the following programming languages and technologies: Python, C++, MLOps (MLflow), CUDA, Spark, and data analytics and infrastructure platforms such as Databricks, Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Hands-on experience in developing and deploying machine learning models is a plus.
- Knowledge of transmission grid operations, particularly in frequency control and balancing energy markets, is advantageous.
Above all, we value curiosity, a strong drive to learn, and a problem-solving mindset over prior experience. If you're eager to tackle complex challenges, adapt quickly, and grow in a dynamic environment, we encourage you to apply—even if you don't meet every requirement.

About us
The electricity industry is undergoing radical change. In Europe, more and more large centralized power plants are being replaced by a large number of decentralized, small renewable power plants. This change poses new challenges. We in the Development & Optimization team develop optimization algorithms and decision support tools for the optimal procurement and use of ancillary services. We are also responsible for the further development of the IT platform for the Swiss ancillary services market and coordinate the project portfolio for the entire business unit.
We offer you varied and exciting tasks in a unique company that is responsible for the most critical infrastructure in Switzerland. Alongside your challenging tasks at Swissgrid, you will benefit from the following advantages:
- Flexible working hours (42 hours a week)
- 25-30 days of holiday, as well as company holiday between Christmas and New Year
- Progressive social benefits and an attractive pension scheme
- Financial support and/or time off for internal or external training courses
