Department(s)
The position is located in the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Branch (FUNDAMENTALS) of the Governance and Tripartism Department (GOVERNANCE). GOVERNANCE provides advice on labour laws based on ILO conventions and recommendations, state-of-the-art technical support and capacity-building to labour ministries and assists labour inspectorates to build capacity and develop strategies to achieve compliance with labour laws. It advocates and helps constituents to build strong and functional institutions and processes for social dialogue and to realize fundamental principles and rights at work.
The FUNDAMENTALS Branch carries out development cooperation, research, statistical and advocacy functions to assist ILO member States to respect, promote and realize Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (FPRW), which are: freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; the elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour; the effective abolition of child labour; the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation, and the right to a safe and healthy working environment. These principles are embodied in the 1998 Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (the 1998 Declaration), amended in 2022, which has become one of the most widely referenced ILO instruments and provides a foundation for the ILO’s vision of decent work for all.
During the 112th session of the International Labour Conference, the ILO adopted a Resolution concerning the third recurrent discussion on FPRW, and the Office developed a Plan of Action on FPRW for the period 2024-2030, which was approved by the Governing Body of the ILO in November 2024.
The intern will primarily support the Branch in the follow-up and implementation of the Plan of Action on FPRW within the FUNDAMENTALS Branch, and with regards to the other Departments involved in its implementation.
Specifically, he/she will work closely with the Branch’s Administrator, the Resource mobilization Officer, and the management team to support the timely delivery of the Branch’s planned outputs and activities; and to develop tools that contribute to shaping new partnerships and leveraging resources for the Branch to implement the Plan of Action.
Learning areas
As an intern within the FUNDAMENTALS Branch, you will gain understanding on the different FPRW and their mutually reinforcing nature, by working closely with Specialists on Fundamental principles and rights at work and technical officers from the different projects and Units of the Branch.
Specifically, you will:
1. Support in follow-up of the Branch’s workplan and the Plan of Action on FPRW 2024-2030
FUNDAMENTALS is responsible for the implementation of the office-wide Plan of Action and has set up an interdisciplinary team – consisting of focal points from the different Departments and Units – to coordinating and following-up on the implementation of this framework, as the Office is expected to submit a progress report to the Governing Body of the ILO by November 2026.
You will support the Administrator, the management team and other colleagues involved to 1) track the progress on outputs led by FUNDAMENTALS in the Plan of Action, and 2) to mainstream the outputs implemented by other Departments and Units of the ILO
2. Contribute to the development of tools and documents that support the resource mobilization efforts of the Branch
You will support FUNDAMENTALS’ task force on resource mobilization and contribute to the development of a package on the offer of services of the Branch. This will entail collecting inputs from different colleagues, editing and validating content, and organizing the information in a visual manner (presentations, content for brochures, factsheets, among others).
3. Support the preparation for the organization of the 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour
As part of the Plan of Action on FPRW, the 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour will be hosted and organized by the Government of Morocco in 2026, with technical support from the ILO. These Global Conferences gather every 4 years ILO constituents and partners to share knowledge and accelerate action to tackle child labour.
You will assist the core team in the preparations for this event in 2025, in particular, the organization of tripartite regional consultations prior to the Global Conference, the publication of regional briefs, the design of the agenda, sessions and invitations, and the definition of the outcome and monitoring / follow-up mechanism.
Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.
Education
Social Policy, Political Science, International relations, Sociology, Economics, Development Studies, Law, or other relevant Social Sciences disciplines.
Applicants must be enrolled at least in a Master's degree programme or must have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.
Experience
Experience supporting planning processes, project implementation and monitoring, resource mobilization, innovation, knowledge management and/or communications, is essential.
Knowledge or previous experience working on any of the fundamental principles and rights at work, labour rights, human rights, social and sustainable development, or any related field is highly desirable.
Languages
Full proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of Spanish or French will be an asset.

Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, as well as organizational skills and attention to detail; strong analytical skills; good communication skills and Microsoft Office skills; initiative and ability to work independently and as a team member.
