Internship - Hardware developement for a measuring device

The Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory  at ETH Zurich performs international leading research on machine tools and in the field of production engineering. For support on a new research project with close industrial contact, we are looking for an intern for CAD and FEM modelling.

Project background

This research will explore innovative design, prototyping, and optimization of mechanical systems, with applications in embedded systems, and smart devices. The project will involve both hardware and software integration, utilizing modern technologies. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop new solutions that enhance reliability, performance, efficiency, and scalability. Ideal for students passionate about design, construction, innovation, and contributing to the future of smart technology.

Job description

  • Design the overall architecture of the system, including selecting suitable components.
  • Develop 3D CAD models of the measuring device and its components using software like SolidWorks or NX.
  • Create parametric designs for adaptability in dimensions and configurations.
  • Perform weight and space optimization while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Generate detailed 2D technical drawings of the CAD models for manufacturing and assembly purposes.
  • Set up and conduct FEM simulations for critical components using tools like ANSYS, Abaqus, or COMSOL.
  • Assemble and prototype the device, ensuring effective integration of hardware components like sensors, actuators, and wireless communication modules.

 Internship duration: 1/2 year. Starting in February 2025 or upon agreement. 

Profile

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Work independently
  • Familiarity with CAD (NX or SolidWorks) is an advantage
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English or German
  • Excellent team collaboration skills
  • Ability to quickly learn new things
