Engineering Product Manager: API as a Product
Location: Remote
The role
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced System/Product Owner to lead the development and management of our API product portfolio. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background in API development, coupled with product management expertise. As a System/Product Owner, you will be responsible for defining the vision, strategy, and roadmap for our API products, ensuring alignment with customer needs and business objectives. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, sales, marketing, and customer support, to deliver high-quality API solutions that drive value for our customers.
What you’ll need to succeed.
You have at least 5 years of successful experience working in a global IT architecture role and 7+ years professional IT experience in a major, global organization.
Responsibilities:
- Product Strategy & Vision:
- Define and communicate the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for API products.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, competitor offerings, and customer feedback to inform product decisions.
- Align API product strategy with overall business objectives and stakeholder needs.
Product Development:
- Collaborate with engineering teams to define technical requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
- Prioritize the product backlog based on business value, customer impact, and technical feasibility.
- Lead the API product development lifecycle, from ideation to launch, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality features.
- Stakeholder Management:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all product-related inquiries and decisions.
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including customers, to gather requirements and feedback.
- Communicate product updates, release plans, and progress to stakeholders at all levels.
Technical Leadership:
- Understand the technical aspects of API development and architecture to make informed decisions.
- Ensure that APIs are designed with scalability, security, and usability in mind.
- Collaborate with technical teams to troubleshoot issues and optimize API performance.
- Market & User Research:
- Conduct market research to identify new opportunities for API products.
- Gather and analyze customer feedback, usage data, and industry insights to continuously improve the product.
- Perform competitive analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the API market.
- Documentation & Training:
- Create and maintain detailed product documentation, including API specifications, use cases, and user guides.
- Provide training and support to internal teams and customers on API product usage and best practices.
- Metrics & Performance:
- Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the success of the API products.
- Monitor and analyze product performance, making data-driven decisions to drive continuous improvement.
- Report on product performance and insights to senior management.
Qualifications/ Skills / Experience:
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
- 5+ years of experience in product management, with a focus on API products or software development.
- Proven track record of successfully managing API products from concept to launch.
- Experienced in overseeing roadmap strategy and definition
- Scrum and agile-based B2B SaaS product management experience
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of API development, RESTful architecture, and cloud technologies.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven mindset.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Embraces ambiguity, prioritizes efficiently, communicates early and directly, and ultimately gets the job done
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Experience with agile development methodologies and tools like Jira, Confluence, and similar platforms.
- Technical Expertise:
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js.
- Understanding of API security protocols (OAuth, JWT, etc.) and standards.
- Experience with API management platforms (e.g., Apigee, Postman, Swagger) is highly desirable.
