Environmental Systems Integration and Controls Engineer

The Architecture and Building Systems (A/S) research group at ETH Zurich investigates active and passive systems for energy supply and climate control in buildings. Our goal is to realize a CO2-neutral built environment that efficiently consumes and produces energy while providing high levels of user comfort.

Project background

The LED Solar Simulator (LEDSS) is a globally unique research apparatus developed by the Architecture and Building Systems (A/S) research group at ETH Zurich for experimental investigations toward Zero Carbon Buildings. Serving as the centerpiece of the new Zero Carbon Building Systems Laboratory at ETH Hönggerberg, the LEDSS provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for research on building components, systems, and occupant comfort—from early proof-of-concept validations to full system demonstrations. The simulator consists of a large-scale artificial sun-like light source and a kinematic system capable of emulating different solar angles. Operating within a controlled artificial environment, the LEDSS can simulate various climates and outdoor conditions, enabling comprehensive studies in building performance and energy efficiency.

Job description

We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated colleague to support the operation and integration of control systems—including the lab's HVAC system and the LED Solar Simulator (LEDSS)—into our test environments. This will enable controlled experiments that emulate different environmental and climatic conditions, supporting various research and testing activities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinating the integration of electrical and control components in existing and new hardware systems.
  • Developing controls and interfaces for solar spectrum and environmental simulations.
  • Designing and implementing control systems for indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, ensuring seamless integration with the building automation system.
  • Establishing robust procedures for measurement, calibration, and data management.
  • Developing and optimizing experimental workflows between simulation platforms and control systems (e.g., National Instruments).

Profile

Essential Qualifications:

  • An engineering degree (Bachelor, Master, FH or equivalent) in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in measurement and control hardware and software, preferably with experience in National Instruments (NI), Beckhoff, and LabVIEW System.           
  • Basic programming skills, with a preference for Python.
  • Strong project management abilities, capable of effectively handling complex technical and interdisciplinary research projects in a dynamic environment with varying scopes and timelines.
  • Professional proficiency in English. Knowledge of German is a plus.
  • Proactive and self-responsible work attitude.
  • Ability, interest and experience in teamwork.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in integrating electrical, thermal, or optical systems.
  • Familiarity with research environments or experience working in university laboratories.
  • Proven experience in developing and managing experimental workflows.
