The Position
As part of Pharma Technicla Development (PTD) our organization is committed to deliver the Pharma ambitions by bringing game-changing therapies from clinical phase I into the market to serve every patient, every day. Our core business is to develop safe, innovative and effective drugs using cutting edge technologies for manufacturing process (Drug Substance and Drug Product), clinical supply, formulation, device, packaging, and analytical development.
As a Data Engineer you will work in the Data and Digital Team (PTDD) within Pharma Technical Development. Global Pharma Technical Development (PTD) is an organization of over two thousand people globally that are integral for the mission of Roche to develop meaningful medicines for patients. PTD actively collaborates and develops innovative technical solutions to bridge early-stage, late-stage and commercial product needs. PTD Data and Digital (PTDD) team is a global team and we pioneer Pharma Technical Development in the Digital World, through seamless data flow, culture & upskilling, and analytics & insights. Our focus is advancing data and digital capabilities towards achieving efficiencies, robust process/product design and speed to patients while championing the enabling digital mindset across our business.
PTDD is responsible for a broad range of services for systems and support across small and large molecule (synthetics and biologics) technical development, device development, analytical sciences, business operations and clinical supply chain. We enable digital integration of data and information across product advancement lifecycle paired with data analytics and intelligent automation, end to end lifecycle support/enhancement for Automation, lab information management systems, data engineering/data science to support PTD functions. We collaborate closely with key partners including Ix, Research and Early Development and other Pharma Technical functions.
As a Data Engineer you will report to the Digital Integration Team Lead in Basel and work in a matrix team of digital experts and SMEs from drug development on the digital future of drug development.
Your Opportunity

Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines to handle large data volumes.

Integrate data from various sources, ensuring quality, consistency, and reliability.

Contribute to data architecture design to support analytics and machine learning.

Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders to meet data needs.

Monitor, optimize, and document data pipelines and storage solutions.

Ensure compliance with data protection and privacy regulations.

Set up automated software quality testing
Who you are
You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Life Sciences, IT, or related field and bring 2-5 years of experience in Data Engineering, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry, ideally with proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, SQL, or Scala as well as experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, Kafka). Further you bring:

Familiarity with data warehousing solutions (Redshift, BigQuery, Snowflake) and technical lab informatics platforms (ELNs, Benchling, Dotmatics).

Experience with containerization (such as Docker, Kubernetes) and orchestration tools (such as L7).

Knowledge of machine learning, large language models, and data science concepts.

Familiarity with visualization and data tools (Tableau, Spotfire, Dataiku, Thoughtspot, Plotly).

English fluency is required; German proficiency is a plus.
