Expected starting date is 1st August 2026 or upon agreement. Working place is at the University of Bern.
The Director of the Oeschger Centre OCCR assumes leadership in the academic development and operational affairs of the OCCR and the Graduate School of Climate Sciences, University of Bern. The OCCR ( https://www.oeschger.unibe.ch/ ) is an internationally renowned strategic Centre of the University of Bern engaged in interdisciplinary climate and climate impact research at the intersections of natural, social, economic, legal and health sciences with about 40 professors from five faculties. The Graduate School of Climate Sciences (https://www.oeschger.unibe.ch/studies/) offers a specialized MSc and PhD program. The OCCR provides a vibrant, stimulating, supportive and inclusive environment to carry out world-leading research and education.



Tasks

Duties as OCCR Director include academic and operational leadership and development of the OCCR and the Graduate School, leading the Management Centre, participating in academic services at all levels, and liaising with the 40 research groups (professors) of the OCCR, with their Departments and Faculties, and with national and international bodies. The professor further develops her/his own scientific profile, leads her/his own research group and is involved in teaching and supervising. The profile of the research group is flexible and may range from climatology, meteorology, climate physics, statistical climatology, climate geology, plant ecology, paleoecology, paleoclimatology, economic geography of climate change to climate impact research or similar. Command of one of the national languages and familiarity with the Swiss academic landscape is an advantage. The professor and her/his research group are hosted at one of the institutes of the Faculty of Science.

Requirements

Candidates hold a PhD in a relevant field. They have proven experience in academic management and leadership, teaching, and mentoring. They have a demonstrated record of high-profile disciplinary and interdisciplinary research in any field of climate or climate impact research, and they value different academic cultures. We are looking for an integrative personality with outstanding interpersonal management and leadership skills.
