Junior Researcher / PhD Position
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
We are seeking a PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary project that integrates ecological field experiments in the Alps, plant phenotyping and genomic analyses.
Project background
The study of plant adaptation to contrasting ecological conditions along elevation gradients in the Alps has the potential to provide novel insights into the genetic basis of adaptation, the selective forces that maintain genetic variation over space and time, and the contributions of phenotypic plasticity to the rapid response to novel or changing ecological conditions.Job description
As part of her / his research, the doctoral student will help with the setup and implementation of the field experiments, maintain and curate the associated database, and contribute to and coordinate the analysis of phenotypic traits and fitness. She / he will then combine these data with genome-wide sequencing information to characterize the genetic basis of trait and fitness variation in different environments and the selective forces acting on the underlying genetic variants.Profile
Essential:
- A Master’s degree in Biology or related disciplines
- A strong background in plant ecology, evolution and statistics
- Excellent communication and writing skills in English
- Good communication skills in German or French
Desirable:
- Experience in bioinformatics
- Programming skills in R and Python
- Knowledge of plant ecology and evolution in the European Alps
Key personal characteristics:
- High intrinsic motivation for academic and personal growth
- Stamina and passion for field work and large field experiments
- Organisational skills in managing scientific data and curating databases
- Commitment to actively participate in and promote a positive work environment
- Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary collaborations
Workplace
We offer
Our Plant Ecological Genetics (PEG) lab is part of the Institute of Integrative Biology (IBZ) in the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zürich. Our research combines population genomic analyses of natural plant populations, ecological field experiments and trait-based analyses under controlled conditions . Our overarching goal is to develop a better understanding of the fundamental processes underlying and shaping plant adaptation and their potential to respond to and cope with rapidly changing environmental conditions. It is our ambition to translate our research into conservation practice. As a member of PEG, you will be part of a diverse and international team that fosters a collaborative atmosphere, utilises cutting-edge approaches and facilities, and supports professional growth.
With this project, you will have:
- Access to excellent research infrastructure
- Ability to work on interdisciplinary research topics
- Possibility to participate in national and international conferences
- Training in high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics
The start date is March 2025 or earlier.
