ROLE DESCRIPTION
• The Corporate Captain (CCT) is part of the Nautical Department (NOR) function that provides 24/7 nautical support and represents the Nautic for the entire Viking River Cruises fleet with the assigned operational areas. The CCT works closely with Captains and nautical staff onboard the ships; The CCT ensures that all vessels within the designated regions operate safely and efficiently, complying with all certifications, regulations, and standards. This allows the teams onboard to deliver the best possible experience to our guests while meeting operational and financial objectives
• The CCT Is in charge of resolving nautical operational challenges, especially during deviation situations (e.g., detours, delays), and coordinates the joint resolution of these challenges with the Corporate Operations Manager and the Director of Nautical Operations. The role involves extensive travel (up to 70%) within the operational region and remote work when not traveling.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Nautical Operations Management
• Oversee nautical operations across the assigned operation areas, ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of all vessels
• Ensure regulatory compliance with all necessary certifications and nautical regulatory requirements in line with the company’s Safety Management System (SMS), based on ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)
• Enhance operational efficiency by identifying areas for improvement and implementing action plans in collaboration with the Director Nautical Operations
• Support deviation management by resolving nautical operational challenges during situations such as detours, delays, or incidents, coordinating with the Corporate Operations Manager
Leadership & Stakeholder Management
• Provide leadership and support to Captains and nautical staff, as a mentor and resource for operational challenges, navigation, compliance, and coordination with land bridges, locks, and docks
• Collaborate with HR to meet nautical staffing needs, including recruitment, and retention
• Collaborate with the planning department for compliant rotations schedules for the nautical crew
• Conduct performance reviews for the senior nautical staff, providing feedback and promoting continual improvement.
• Develop strong relationships with the Core Team Members, assuring optimal onboard operations
• Liaise with the Compliance department and, when needed, with authorities and internal teams to ensure compliance with ISO standards and environmental regulations, including RED III
• Communicate updates among office, core, and nautical teams for nautical operations
Operational Backup
• Serve as an interim Captain when necessary, ensuring uninterrupted operations during Captain absences and maintaining the highest safety and service standards.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Leadership & Functional Skills
• Proven ability to lead and mentor multicultural teams, supporting nautical staff from sailors to Master Captains
• Strong management skills with excellent organizational and communication abilities.
• Expertise in performance management to ensure operational efficiency, punctuality, and effective incident handling.
• A continuous improvement mindset with experience in implementing new systems and processes
Education and Professional Experience
• Graduate of an inland shipping education program with a minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a Captain on an inland river vessel
• Experience in fleet management or overseeing multiple vessels is a significant advantage
• Holds all required certificates and licenses for inland waterways (e.g., Rhine and Danube licenses)
• Familiarity with ISM Code and ISO 45001/14001 is highly advantageous.
• Additional certifications such as training or auditing are beneficial but not required

Other Skills & Requirements
• Excellent English skills (written and verbal); other languages (mainly German) are an advantage but not required
• Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and Microsoft 365 applications, including Power BI
• Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor
• Flexible work hours: able to work extended and/or irregular hours, including weekends, with on-call availability for emergencies
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively (up to 70%) within the operational areas
• Remote work capability when not traveling, ensuring availability for coordination, meetings, and fleet oversight
