Description
The Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK), University of Bern has an opened position for a qualified and experienced staff bioinformatician to perform bioinformatic analyses of microbial and viral pathogens of clinical importance within its accredited Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) laboratory.
We seek
A researcher with competence in bioinformatics who will: A) perform and further develop bioinformatic data analysis (NGS data workflow, database curation, reporting), and B) provide statistical support for process validation and process automation in the accredited microbiology diagnostic department of the institute.



Bioinformatics / Biostatistics Staff scientist

Essential qualifications include

  • Postgraduate degree in bioinformatics or related field (MSc as minimal qualification)
  • Relevant work experience in NGS data analysis (amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, metagenomics/transcriptomics)
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience with Unix (Linux) systems
  • Advanced scripting skills (e.g., R/Bioconductor, bash, Python/Perl, Julia, Snakemake, Nextflow)
  • Reliability, flexibility and ability to work in a dynamic team
  • Excellent oral and written communication (reporting and documentation)
  • Spoken and written fluency in German and English (German is mandatory for this position)

The following qualifications are advantageous

  • Experience in clinical, medical or quality-control environments
  • Background in clinical microbiology, diversity analysis, phylogenetics, or related fields
  • Advanced use of statistical analysis (e.g. multivariate analysis, Bayesian statistics, machine learning algorithms)

The IFIK provides an international, collaborative atmosphere and a multidisciplinary approach to the entire spectrum of microbiology in diagnostics, research and teaching. Opportunities to be trained specifically on emerging technologies in bioinformatics and sequencing will be offered as needed.
The salary will be based on the University of Bern's system (salary and social insurance).
  • Percentage of salary: 80-100%
  • Starting date: October 2024
  • Duration: Fixed-term contract for 24 months. Depending on performance and motivation, possibility of permanent contract
