Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine
We are seeking a motivated statistician to support the Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry (ChCR) and associated research groups using ChCR data at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Bern. The ChCR (www.childhoodcancerregistry.ch) is the national population-based registry for all cancers in children and adolescents in Switzerland, playing a central role in cancer surveillance and epidemiological research. The successful candidate will contribute to the routine statistical analyses for cancer surveillance and to research projects focused on childhood cancer epidemiology.
The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) at the University of Bern performs research in a range of disciplines relevant to public health (www.ispm.unibe.ch). Groups cut across divisions, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to research in the fields of clinical epidemiology, social and behavioral health, biostatistics, and international and environmental health. The ISPM is highly reputed for its expertise in health effects of environmental exposures, the spread of infectious diseases, and the health of vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct statistical analyses for cancer surveillance reports and publications.
- Optimize data flows and work routines for statistical evaluations within the registry.
- Communicate with external partners, including the National Agency for Cancer Registration and federal offices.
- Contribute to epidemiological research on childhood cancer risk factors and cancer registration methodologies.
- Apply advanced statistical methods such as survival analysis under competing risks.
- Write reports, scientific manuscripts and present findings at conferences.
Qualifications and skills:
- PhD or MSc in statistics, mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Strong foundation in biostatistical methodology.
- Experience in epidemiological research, preferably in cancer epidemiology.
- Excellent programming skills in R (experience in Python is an asset).
- Proven experience in scientific writing and publication.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; good written and oral skills in German (mother tongue an advantage)
- Diligent, independent worker and strong team player.

The position is long-term, but the contractual agreement is issued for a limited period as part of the project mandate from the Federal Office of Public Health.
