The Department of Biomedicine is a joint effort between the University of Basel and the University Hospitals Basel. It unites basic and clinical scientists to advance our understanding of health and disease and to develop pioneering therapies benefiting the lives of patients in areas of unmet need. With more than 70 research groups and 800 employees, the Department of Biomedicine is the largest department at the University. We are located in the heart of Basel at 6 different locations. Be part of our future!
The Flow Cytometry Core Facility at the DBM is seeking a motivated student to assist with basic tasks related to flow cytometry equipment and daily operations. This position is ideal for someone looking to learn and gain experience in the field of flow cytometry.
Your position
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with Basic Sorting Operations:
- Set Up Basic Sorting Protocols: Under supervision, the student will help set up sorting protocols by selecting appropriate settings on the flow cytometers, such as adjusting parameters like forward scatter (FSC), side scatter (SSC), and fluorescence channels. This ensures the instrument is correctly configured for each experimental need.
- Monitor the Sorting Process: The student will observe the sorting process, ensuring it proceeds smoothly and according to protocol. They will assist with minor adjustments based on feedback from senior staff, such as modifying settings to improve sorting accuracy or troubleshoot minor issues. Their role will involve ensuring samples are being sorted into the correct collection tubes or plates.
- Cleaning Instruments: The student will participate in the routine cleaning and maintenance of flow cytometry instruments. Proper cleaning is vital to maintaining instrument performance and longevity.
- Monitoring sorter performance: The student will assist in performing basic operational checks to ensure the sorters are running consistently. This includes verifying that the flow rate remains stable, ensuring the nozzle is free from clogs, checking fluid levels.
- Restocking Reagents: The student will assist in maintaining an adequate inventory of consumables and reagents required for sorting experiments. This includes sorting buffers, cleaning solutions, and cell staining reagents. The student will ensure that these materials are well-stocked, properly stored, and ready for use.
Your profile
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, with a strong interest in learning flow cytometry techniques and a genuine curiosity about life sciences. They are eager to support the research team, capable to work independently, and stay committed for at least a year. With a service-oriented mindset and the ability to follow instructions, they are proactive in asking questions and developing their scientific skills. The candidate should be currently enrolled in a life sciences program (e.g., BSc or MSc).
