The Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDyST) at the University of Lausanne invites applications for a 2-year Postdoctoral position, in the research group “Atmospheric Processes” led by Prof. Domeisen ( https://wp.unil.ch/atmos/ ), focussing on atmospheric dynamics and circulation, with applications to extreme events and their impacts.

Expected start date in position : 01.08.2025 or to be agreed
Contract length : 2 years initially; renewable for up to 4 years, subject to availability of funds.
Activity rate : 100%
Workplace : Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST), Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (FGSE), University of Lausanne (Mouline, Building Géopolis)
Your responsibilities
The aim of the project is to advance the understanding of the causes, subseasonal predictability, and impacts of stratosphere – troposphere coupling on extreme surface and compound events. We invite candidates with research interests in one or several of the topics of atmospheric wave dynamics, teleconnections, extreme events and their impacts, and/or extended-range predictability.
The successfull candidate will have access to the high-performance computing capabilities at UniL and/or the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) as required by the research project.
In the project, your main responsabilities will be to:
- Conduct independent guided research at the intersection of atmospheric circulation and prediction
- Disseminate results through scientific publications and conference presentations
- Actively work with local and international collaborators
- Contribute to an inclusive work environment
- Contribute to teaching and/or exercise classes
Your qualifications
In order to complete our team, we are looking for someone with the following skills :
- PhD degree in atmospheric / climate science, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or a related domain
- Excellent programming and data analysis skills
- Strong background in atmospheric dynamics and global atmospheric circulation
- Motivated to advance the field of global-scale atmospheric dynamics and extended-range prediction
- Fluent in written and spoken English.
