The Global News Editor is part of the public communications team and reports to the Head of Editorial:
Writing and Content Development
• Serve as the in-house senior writer, responsible for writing and editing a wide range of texts in English, ensuring they are clean, compelling, and jargon-free. This includes high-quality opinion pieces, news releases, and other media products for external and owned platforms.
• Draft public texts on a range of subjects related to ICRC operations and thematic issues, liaising with key units and delegations as needed.
• Formulate ideas, seek out opportunities, and conduct research into ICRC news stories to draft compelling public-facing products.
Media Strategy and Management
• Set the daily/weekly news agenda for ICRC by running coordination meetings, such as the global editorial meeting, and making decisions on timing and priority of news output.
• Oversee the management of global media enquiries, ensuring timely and professional responses.
• Represent the institution as a spokesperson in the Geneva press office and work with regional and delegation spokespeople across the ICRC network to ensure consistency of message and approach.
• Provide guidance and support to field and headquarters staff on media strategy, including media analysis to guide decisions around messaging, audience, and channels.
• Interact with journalists in response to queries and during media pitching and outreach efforts.
Media Training and Leadership Support
• Act as the lead in-house media trainer for leadership, spokespeople, and ICRC staff on representing the ICRC in the news media.
• Coach and train communication staff in the field and at headquarters on best practices in message development, media writing, and media relations.
• Provide hands-on support to senior leadership around media engagements, including messaging and interview practice, and assist delegations in media engagement plans during senior leadership visits.
Collaboration and Team Management
• Serve as Geneva media relations focal point for the regional PROs, providing the support and guidance they need to successfully conduct their media relations work.
• Work in collaboration with the COMs advisors of the president and director-general to draft or edit public texts for leadership sign-off.
• Lead recruitments and actively participate in team management and decision-making, particularly for regional PROs.
