We're seeking a Green Coffee Trader, senior for SCTC office, based in Lausanne, an affiliate company of Starbucks Coffee Company, is responsible for all of Starbucks green coffee purchasing functions and continues an unwavering commitment to sourcing, roasting and delivering only the highest quality Arabica coffees. 

As a Green Coffee Trader, senior, you will…

contribute to Starbucks success by handling and managing all aspects of global green coffee purchasing, supplier base development and optimization of the quality/price ratio in accordance with the company’s evolving needs, sustainability goals, and aspirations.

You model and act in accordance with Starbucks mission and values both internally and externally while coaching and mentoring fellow partners in the trading and traffic team.

The key responsibilities and essential job functions of a Senior Green Coffee Trader include but are not limited to the following:  


  • The partner handles and manages green coffee purchases from specific origins and/ or for particular categories and/or specific relationships scrupulously and responsibly; this encompasses all activities related to negotiating and concluding contracts and/or agreements, pricing and hedging transactions in accordance with functional limits and policies, recording, documenting and maintaining accurate and complete records of all transactions, monitoring and ensuring contract fulfillment and compliance. 

  • The partner successfully develops, executes, and manages, from inception to completion, complex sourcing projects and programs focused on unlocking farm productivity, scaling farm profitability, and creating climate resiliency in our supply chain. Additionally, the partner demonstrates proficiency in assessing, evaluating, and conveying the project/program results and data effectively throughout its duration. 

  • The partner is intricately involved, in close collaboration with leadership, in the design, management, and execution of the global sourcing strategy while driving the necessary cross-functional workstreams within the Global Coffee and Sustainability organization to align with enterprise sustainability goals, and through strategic alignment with the coffee development team. 

  • The partner proactively identifies problems and independently leads and drives solutions without leadership guidance in accordance with the company’s needs. 

  • The partner proactively supports all planning and executional aspects of green coffee procurement both internally and externally; this involves continuous cross-functional collaboration and coordination with supply/demand planning, quality, coffee development, logistics & operations, finance, sustainability, manufacturing, marketing, legal and other internal teams, vendors, external customers, and stakeholders. 

  • The partner attentively monitors, investigates, evaluates, and communicates relevant market developments in specific origins and/or categories and customer relationships under her/his responsibility as well as market trends in the global coffee marketplace to support both daily business decisions as well as strategic procurement plans for the trading team and the company altogether. Regular communication with peers, suppliers and other business stakeholders, travel to origin countries, attendance of industry events, internal company events and meetings are required in this context. 

  • The partner thoughtfully cultivates and develops mutually beneficial vendor and supply chain relationships that support Starbucks current and future business needs and interests; this involves but is not limited to conducting regular business reviews, supplier and customer education & training sessions as well as developing, supporting and/or managing projects and initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. 

  • The partner can analyze and present data to develop and optimize strategies and processes, identify trends, increase efficiency, and monitor performance. 

  • The partner enthusiastically supports internal and external coffee education programs, initiatives and events as deemed necessary by the company. 

  • The partner acts as the Starbucks ambassador and spokesperson for our origin sourcing activities. 

  • The partner proactively communicates with and helps Starbucks FSC’s align their activities with the company’s strategic procurement plan, programs, and interests in the origins under her/his responsibility. 


 Basic Qualifications 


  • Education (minimum level): diploma in business administration or international trade or similar qualification 

  • Skills (required): Fluent in spoken and written English, proficient in MS Excel, Word, PPT and Outlook, clear and concise communication, good analytical ad project management skills, customer and results oriented, intermediate sensory skills, self-organized team player.  Proven deep knowledge on pricing and price risk management: Terminal market and hedging principles and limitations along different segments of supply chain. 

  • Years of experience in specific field or utilizing designated skills (minimum needed to be qualified): >7 years of trading experience in coffee trading enterprises, either export or import or combination. Regular coffee cupping experience. 


Preferred Qualifications 


  • Education (ideal education level or degree): Masters in Business Administration or related post-graduate degree, Q-Grader or similar qualification is a plus. 

  • Skills (ideal): Fluent in spoken and written English, Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages is a plus, proficient in MS Excel, Word, PPT and Outlook, working experience with other IT systems e.g. Oracle, SAP or other, clear and concise communication, strong analytical and project management skills, customer and results focused, detailed oriented, strong sensory skills, strong team player with leadership and organizational proficiency. 

  • Years of experience in specific field or designated skills: >10 years of trading experience in coffee trading enterprises including export and import operations and related trade services, frequent cupping experience.
