The SCION Association is a non-profit organization facilitating the global adoption of the SCION next-generation Internet. The Association promotes collaboration within the ecosystem, sharing know-how with its members, facilitating open source development, while enabling reliable, secure, and interoperable implementations thanks to standardization.
Project background
The open-source SCION implementation is developed by a growing community of developers from both commercial SCION vendors and academia under the governing umbrella of the SCION Association. In order to boost the growth of the SCION ecosystem, the Association supports the open source community with a team of software engineers specifically tasked to enhance and improve the open-source SCION implementation.
Job description
Key responsibilities:
Code Maintenance and Development:
- Maintain and enhance Design and implement enhancements and changes to large-scale distributed and security-critical applications written in Go
- Implement new features, fix bugs, and optimize the codebase.
- Write and maintain documentation for developers and users.
Quality Assurance:
- Review and merge contributions from the community, ensuring code quality and consistency, providing constructive feedback
- Maintain build and test tooling and CI pipelines
- Develop and maintain automated testing frameworks to ensure code quality and reliability.
Developer Community Engagement:
- Provide support to contributors and users, helping them with issues, questions, and guidance.
- Shape the overall direction of the project, define and manage the project's roadmap and release cycles, ensuring regular release cycles
- Coordinate with other contributors and stakeholders to prioritize and plan development efforts (e.g. in periodic contributors calls, in the Technical Committee for implementation, the governing body for the implementation)
- Participate and speak in community events (e.g. IETF Hackathon)
Standardization:
- Support other team members team with contributions to SCION IETF Internet Drafts, evolve implementation in line with standardization activities
The starting date is as soon as possible.
Profile
You are an independent and reliable software engineer and have 5+ years of experience with the design, implementation and testing of large-scale systems with particular attention to security, scalability, and high performance. Ideally, you bring in some of the following skills:
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- BS or advanced degree in computer science, engineering or relevant work experience
- Experience contributing to open-source projects
- Knowledge of Go, ideally also C, as well as Python and shell scripting
- Knowledge of software and system testing practices and tools
- Knowledge of computer networks, routing protocols, network protocols and techniques
- Understanding of cryptographic operations, PKIs and certificates
- Previous experience as an open-source project maintainer or contributor or with standards development processes as the IETF
