PhD Student in 4D X-ray imaging for laser-based additive manufacturing

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

For the Laboratory of Nuclear Materials and the Laboratory for Synchrotron Radiation and Femtochemistry we are looking for a

Your tasks

We are developing a novel approach for operando 3D imaging of laser Additive Manufacturing (AM) using X-ray multi-projection imaging (XMPI) that will aim to provide understanding of defect formation and its dependence on the melt pool dynamics. Ability to visualize melt pool in 3D will provide data essential for development of numerical simulations of AM. An important part of this research and the main task of the PhD project, will be building a new AM machine compatible with XMPI technique as well as conventional μCT. You will work in a dynamic team at PSI in close collaboration with two partner teams from ETH Zurich and Lund University. The project will include experiments at various synchrotron facilities: SLS at PSI, MAX IV (Sweden), ESRF (France).

The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Photonics (EDPO) of EPFL.

Your research activity will focus on:
  • Development of an experimental laser powder bed fusion machine that will be used for operando X-ray multi-projection imaging, it will include redesigning and modifying an existing infrastructure
  • Perform experiments using the built setup at various X-ray sources (e.g. SLS, MAX IV, ESRF)
  • Data analysis and publication of the results

Your profile

  • Master degree in physics, materials sciences, automation or related field
  • Additional assets (not all of them are required):
o Knowledge of condensed matter physics
o Knowledge about physics of X-ray interaction with matter and X-ray characterization techniques (e.g. computed tomography)
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab)
  • Good knowledge of English both spoken and in writing

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
