Mechatronics specialist with focus on LabView? programming
We are an ETH laboratory located at Technopark Zurich, focusing on applied mechanics in manufacturing applications that encompass experiments as well as numerical simulations. We are at the forefront of research on ductile fracture, specializing in mechanical testing over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures. Besides classical mechanical tests (e.g. on uniaxial or biaxial testing machines), we are specialized in dynamic experiments on Split-Hopkinson bars as well as experiments at different length scales and temperatures. All experimental efforts lay the groundwork for developing our material and fracture models, which we use to accurately predict observed material behavior.
Job description
The position encompasses the development of state-of-the art automated and robot-assisted experimental setups together with a small team of experienced and highly motivated researchers. The focus will be on the development, enhancement, and maintenance of LabView™ programs to automate mechanical experiments, control devices, acquire data and carry out post-processing operations. Other tasks comprise mechanical design (about 10%) and machining as well as electronics (about 10%). Examples are:
Integration of components to automate mechanical experiments: programming of acquisition cards, machine vision, robotics, acquisition software for test automation with National Instruments LabView™
Design and construction of testing equipment along with team members, both mechanical and electrical, e.g. mechanical testing devices or amplifiers
Day-to-day operations and maintenance of existing devices
Ad-hoc mechanical machining of simple parts or devices needed for lab operations
Material and parts orders and contact with suppliers
Profile
Being a dynamic research group, our success relies on innovative team members who have an entrepreneurial mindset and are open to constantly learn and challenge new things and ways of proceeding.
Education, certifications and experience:
Technical vocational training or higher with focus on Mechatronics/ Electronics
A first, solid experience in the industry or in a similar environment (2-5years)
National Instruments CLD/CLA would be a plus
Familiarity with automation techniques and robotic systems used in experimental setups
Experience in acquiring, post-processing and analyzing experimental data
Softwares and programs:
Technical proficiency and solid expertise in developing, maintaining, and troubleshooting LabView™ programs (2-5 years) to integrate hardware components and sensors
Experienced with CAD software for designing mechanical parts and assemblies (preferably Dassault SolidWorks®)
Mechanical and hands-on:
Knowledge of setting up and conducting mechanical experiments (e.g. tension/compression experiments), preferably with universal testing machines as well as split Hopkinson pressure bar systems would be a plus
Basic skills in machining to fabricate or modify simple mechanical components with CNC-machines (e.g. mills, lathes, etc.) or other machine shop tools
Experienced in bonding techniques, e.g. glueing and soldering of strain gauges, would be a plus
Knowledge of designing electric switch cabinets would be a plus
Knowledge of microscopes (optical or scanning electron) and specimen preparation would be a plus
Language requirements:
The candidate should be fluent in English and proficient in German (B1)
